June 19, 2014, I was in Johor Bharu, KSL City and Alfred came by. I met Alfred once about a year ago, but I did not spoke to him then because I was about to catch a bus back to Singapore. I managed to hear a few minutes of his conversations with my teacher and another fellow brother. Deep in my heart, I could feel he is a righteous person.

Today, we shook hands, swiftly walked to a coffee house two levels up, ordered a cup of coffee each and sat down. Soon after taking the first sip of coffee, without further ado, he said, “This is the most trying period. I am a real estate agent. The sellers are setting selling prices that are way too high, giving the prospective buyer a return of less than 2.5%, annualized return. Might as well, the buyer keep his money as fixed deposit with a bank that gives slightly less than 4% at the current published interest rate.”

Reassuringly, I said, “During challenging times like this, all the more you must have the blessings of God. And here are three key points that I am going to share with you, how to seek His blessings, fruitfully. First, you are a righteous person. Righteous means …”

Alfred interjected and made a clarification, “Wait a minute. At best, I know I am a compassionate person. There were several occasions where someone in need of financial help and though, I do not have any money, I called and borrowed from my friends to help them get over difficult periods. Often, friends commented I am foolish or is a stupid person.”

1. Will God rejoices at what I am doing?

I continued, “Let me explain to you, two things about righteousness. One, righteousness is always holding God in reverence, high above oneself. Two, words and deeds of righteousness that you have to put into everyday practices, make righteousness a daily habit. Therefore, when you speak, be conscious that every word you speak is received as a positive message by the receiving party and to everything that you do, always ask yourself, ‘Will God rejoices at what I am doing?’ or, ‘Will He be disappointed with my action(s)?’ If your answer in the former is ‘Yes’ go ahead and do it. If the answer for the later is ‘Yes’, stop. Do not do execute the action(s) that you are about to carry out.”

Alfred commented softly, “Everyone else doesn’t seem to be doing it … in this righteous way.”

I ignored his dispirited feedback. I emphasized, “God is always in search of righteous people, no matter how few they may be, He is constantly seeking them out. And you are one of them. Otherwise, you shall not be sitting with me, sipping coffee together.”

Alfred returned a broad smile. He does not know I am a spiritual writer [1].

I carried on and re-emphasized, “I have already shared with you the first point -- To everything that you do, always ask yourself, ‘Will God rejoice at what I am doing?’ or “Will He be disappointed with my action(s)?’ It is pretty simple, isn’t it?.”

Alfred nodded his head in acceptance and said, “This is the first time I heard such a simple and easy way to put righteousness into daily practice. From now onwards, I shall practice it.”

2. No greed

I began to elaborate, “Now, I am going to share with you the second point. You are putting in all your time and resources running about meeting people. Only when a deal is done, you received your fees due. Please remember this. You have worked hard to clinch the deal. The agency fee, therefore, is a deserving reward for you. Each of us is entitled to take on a job to earn a living. However, this is it – a mere mean to earn a living. On an everyday basis, you cannot think about the agency fee, how much or how lucrative a particular deal would be and worse, start being calculative which deal to put in more effort and which one to ignore.”

Alfred nodded his head, in concurrence.

I continued, “This is exactly how I taught my youngest daughter, ‘On an everyday basis, you just focus on getting the tasks on hand done and completed without error. At the end of every month, you shall receive your salary as agreed upon in the employment contract. Do not be calculative and start weighing the work load assigned to you. Just do it and get it done to the best that you can be.’

Is that clear enough?”

Alfred commented, “She is like me. Just do it. Yea... I am sort of stupid, in the eyes of my friends.”

I interjected, “Please … stop making that kind of reproaching comment. Do you think I want to encourage my beloved daughter to be stupid? Certainly not! This is part and parcel of developing her EQ, Emotional Intelligence[[2]]. EQ is all about how other people feel about her, how they can connect with her. Here I am, guiding her in the development of her Emotional Intelligence. It is her EQ that is going to help her win over the hearts of all the people whom she is working with, now and in the future.

On the contrary, if she were to pause, make assessments on every task assigned to her as either difficult, consumes a lot of time and effort, short deadline, or she grumbles while the other colleagues are slacking she is often laid with task after task endlessly, she is the main culprit, the root cause of her own downfall, through self-demoralization. Will she succeed, one day?

She has been working ten months now. She was not once, reprimanded by her supervisors. Perhaps, every one of them finds that she is such an effective and efficient worker. They all love her, I supposed.”

Alfred nodded his head and asked, “I get your point. What’s next?”

I exclaimed, “Not yet. That’s not the full picture.

May 26, 2014 was my 54th birthday. She and I had dinner together. She told me, ‘Now, I can cut down on over-time or working late till mid-night because several fresh graduates had just come on board. They must worked hard in preparations for their bar exams. Once they passed the bar exams, they get higher salary. More money is the driver behind work hard.’

I interjected and said, ‘Lin, dad is a 圣洁 [3] (shèng jié) person. In front of me, you cannot say, ‘more money’. That has a negative connotation, greed. To say, ‘higher salary’ is alright because it is a relative term that describes how they earn as a living, before and after passing the bar exams.’

She nodded her head.

Being a caring father, I asked her, ‘since you do not intent to sit for the bar exams at this juncture, what do you aspire in life?’

She replied earnestly, ‘Dad, I have three loves: eat well, travel and Porsche.”

‘The sport car, Porsche?’, I asked to clarify.

She nodded and said, ‘Dad, I already have a collection of them.’ At the same time, she passed me her mobile phone and showed me the pictures of her collection of Porsche cars. I took hold of her Sony Experia mobile phone and begun looking at the pictures, glided my fingers over the screen to get on to the next picture. I saw a beautiful silver color Porsche. I examined it for a few seconds and then asked, ‘when did you get this silver Porsche. It is extremely beautiful? It must be an expensive piece.’

She replied, ‘That is a limited edition. While I was still studying in Shanghai, I attended a Porsche car exhibition. The promoter gave it to me.’

I exclaimed, ‘How could he have given it away to you?’

She replied, ‘Dad, I do not know why. Sometimes, I get things that I had wished for. It is, as simple as that.’

I looked at her eyes. I can see the purity in her heart, unadulterated, with no greed at all. Softly, I said to myself: ‘She is such a blessed person. God blesses her and shall all her wishes come true? She could be driving a full-size Porsche car and not one of these model cars.’

Now Alfred, do you get me? If you were to work for a decent living with no greed in mind, you shall be blessed with success after success.”

Alfred commented, “The current world is all about greed.”

I looked straight into his eyes and said, “Does anyone of us realized the moment he studies financial management as a course work, he had already set himself on the road of … no bliss?”

Alfred raised his head and asked, “Why do you say so?”

I explained, “Financial management, as it is being taught today is all about after more money, be it in terms of debt-bearing loans, interest rates, better returns, least costs, higher profit and etc. The fundamental element in financial management is GREED.”

Alfred murmured to himself, “With no greed in mind, I am blessed … with successes in all my endeavors. Yes, I am a person with no greed. All these years, I have been practicing ‘no greed’. I do not need to learn what Financial Management is all about.”

I concluded with this statement, “Point two, no greed in whatsoever that you are pursuing, period.”

3. Selflessness or无我 [4] (wú wǒ)

Alfred took a long sip and stared at me, quite blank. He was sort of in a daze, overwhelmed with my explanation on the subtle difference in one’s behavior at work. When one focuses on getting his job down well, it is not greed. However, when one focuses on getting more money or more about just anything is greed.

I continued, “Now, I am going to share with you a Chinese phrase, 以德服众 [5] (yǐ dé fú zhòng). It means, winning the respect of the people by giving them real benefits. How do you hand out real benefits?”

Alfred, “Put myself in the other party’s shoes with full empathy and find out earnestly what he wants at this juncture. Once, I went on a trip to Endau, south-east of Pahang state, a region where the native aborigines live. A family of five has no food to eat for several days. The father’s left leg has a large infected wound and the lymph node at his inner thigh was largely swollen. I drove my jeep to the nearest village which is twenty kilometers away, bought food for five and delivered it to their table. After they have finished their meals, I helped the father to board onto my jeep and I sent him to the nearest hospital where he was hospitalized for a week. Before I left the hospital, I went to the admission department, pulled out all the cash from my wallet and made an advance payment. I told the clerk, ‘I shall return a week later to pay all his balance medical bills.’

I am a compassionate person. I help just anyone who is in need of assistance, even a stranger like this aborigine and his family.”

I listened with full empathy. I pointed out, “That is 德 (dé). You had given out real benefits. Compassion is a powerful inner drive to handing out benefits to others. It is one of three important sources of 德.

Next is kindness. Kindness is all about giving, giving and giving. First, you give out real benefits to others without asking whether he or she touches your inner compassionate feeling. Second, you just give out real benefits without asking if you were to end up on the losing end. Third, you give out real benefits to the recipients without expecting anything in return. Fourth, you give out real benefits because of the occasion, such as during a charity drive campaign.

To comprehend kindness better, you must understand this analogy. The sun provides light, warm and hope to every living things. It is also their principal source of energy. All life on Earth ultimately depends on the sun energy to sustain a living. However, the sun does not want anything in return. That is true kindness.”

Alfred pronounced, “Kindness is the second source of 德.”

I asked, “Do you not know that kindness pays?”

Alfred immediately retorted, “If you say, ‘kindness pays’, then it goes against what you have explained in point three: you give out real benefits to the recipients without expecting anything in return. Therefore, I beg to differ.”

I elucidated, “You give out kindness without expecting anything in return. That is, you. You are a kind person. However, it does not mean God would not reward you with more than what you have given out. Remember. Earlier I said, ‘God is always in search of righteous people’. He too, is always in search of kind people. This is the reason why I explicitly revealed, ‘kindness pays’.”

Alfred was caught by a little surprise. He exclaimed, “All my life I have been giving out real benefits on compassionate grounds and I have been kind to almost everyone. Yet, I did not expect anything in return.”

I emphasized, “All compassionate and kind people are fully blessed. Just that you do not know it until just now when I mentioned, ‘God is always in search of righteous people ... and kind people. And He rewards them profusely.’

May I ask, ‘do you lack in anything?’”

Alfred looked straight into my eyes and took a deep breath. Several seconds later, he replied, “Honestly, I do not lack in anything. Perhaps, I often landed myself in tight situations. Somehow, aids, assistances and support from friends came in neatly making my woes or misfortunes, short and painless.”

I explained, “This is a Heaven mandate to the world of the spirits or you might prefer to call them, angels. They are supposed to reward all who had performed good deeds, irrespective of whether they are executed out of compassion or kindness or love. Cheering, giving confidence and rewarding immediately those who had performed good deeds is the most heartening way of encouraging everyone to be kind to each other, isn’t it?”

Alfred nodded his head and said, “All good deeds are being rewarded, no less than the real benefits that were given out. Your words ring out loud, angelically. I fully agree. Yet, nobody told me, before.”

Softly, I asked, “Next. Do you love your enemy?”

Alfred replied immediately, “No. This is something that, perhaps, I could not.”

I explained, “When Jesus said, ‘love your enemy’, it means accept him, stay with him, convince him what is right or wrong, influence him to avoid hurting others and do good deeds instead, and see that he is eventually a reformed[[6]] person - a reformed person whom the people shall love and respect.”

Alfred exclaimed, “Wow! Love your enemy means going to the extent to turn him into a reformed person whom everyone loves and respects? This is truly mind-boggling.”

I continued, “In the Hebrew language it is called agape love, or unconditional love. Unconditional means no differentiation of whether one is this or that, belongs to this class or that class, has been this or that, or etc. Unconditional love means, love anyone for who he or she is, selflessly.”

Alfred asked earnestly, “How can you not first make an assessment before you love someone? It cannot be the case where your love is already brimming and over-flow onto whoever comes near you, as if you can’t stop loving everyone. I cannot imagine this.”

I continued, “When you do not name someone as an enemy, foe, opponent, rival, adversary, competitor, contestant, contender, challenger, opposing team, the opposition or trouble-maker, there is no need for you to think about protecting yourself or safe-guarding your self-interests. Few people understand, at the very moment he names someone as an enemy or any name as is listed above he automatically thinks about defending himself and thus, starts placing him as more important.

May I ask, more important than whom?”

Alfred promptly replied, “Of course, more important that his enemy or etc.”

I stamped my remark, “No. You are wrong. You are absolutely wrong. The moment he places himself as more important, he had already placed God out of his mind. Remember what I said at the beginning of our discussion, I said ‘make righteousness into a daily habit. When you speak, be conscious that every word you speak is received as a positive message by the receiving party and to everything that you do, always ask yourself, ‘Will God rejoices at what I am doing? Or, will He be disappointed with my action(s).’ In other words, the moment you think you are more important you had turned away from being a righteous person.”

Alfred called out in disbelief, “How can someone stay righteous when he is facing his enemy, rivals or a butting challenger? That’s … Impossible!”

Softly, I defended my proposition, “If you were to read the articles published at my personal blog ericwoonct.blog.163.com under section, SQ – Selfless Quotient, you should know who views me as his number one enemy and you have already heard enough how he had viciously dealt with every single one of his opponents. However, I did not ever treat him as an enemy. I even wrote to him telling him I love him unconditionally because he is one of us. Why?”

Alfred shook his head, in a totally baffled state.

I continued, “When my heart is untainted with word that rhymes like enemy or rival or challenger or opponent, do I have to invoke Jesus’ teaching, ‘love thy enemy’? Absolutely, there is no need for that.”

Alfred still could not break away from his current mindset. He said, “How could one not defend himself from the on-slaughter of his enemy or opponent?”

I said, “The answer is pretty straight-forward. When a person is untainted with word that rhymes like enemy, he is as pure and desire-less as a baby. A want to defend him does not even arise in his mind. What do you think God would do? He shall defend him in his own capacity.

Why?

God is ever searching for a person who is so pure at heart that He can transcend into him. This is what I called ‘In unity with God’. It is God who transcends into him. Not the other way round, say, he transcends into God. In Chinese, it is called, 二而为一。Only when a cultivated person had achieved the level of selflessness or无我 (wú wǒ) shall God choose to transcend into him.”

Alfred lamented, “Eric, I have read and heard of many different forms of teachings and meditation methods that supposedly guide us to God. But, none of them is as simple as you have just shared with me.”

I added, “All these teachings have gone wrong from a simple perspective. The one who meditates wanted to see God. Worse, still carrying a huge baggage of greed, he is after more of everything. Will God transcend into him?”

Alfred promptly replied, “Definitely, the answer is no.”

I added, “Yet, as stubborn as a mule, a person persists in his meditation practices, hoping to see God. Instead of seeing God, he sees godly images[[7]] in bright orange color. These are all false images that the wayward spirits transform themselves into and with only one aim, that is, to fool the person into believing he has seen God.”

Alfred summarized, “From now onwards, I shall practice righteousness, no greed and selflessness.”

I elaborated, “Actually I have shared with you five principles. They are righteousness, no greed, compassion, kindness and unconditional love. When a person incessantly put into practice all these five principles, over time, he should be able to achieve the state of selflessness or the state of ‘In unity with God’.”

Alfred lamented softly, “Well, I have yet to learn, unconditional love.”

[1]  This is the first time I am revealing the bona fide meaning of a spiritual writer. When I published my writing, all the spirits read every single word of it. A week before December 21, 2012, I published an article on this date which was then prevalently marked as the end of the world or a similar catastrophes. Erroneously, I typed a word that implies a negative connotation. This shook the world of the spirits. They wondered how could the spiritual writer been fooled by the false prophets. Swiftly, I admitted my mistake, sought immediately forgiveness and in full humility, I said, “If I can be fooled by them, what about the billions of people out there?” December 29, 2012, I received information that all the false prophets[[1]] were put into Hell.

A cultivated person whose soul is fully under his control, no greed, free from impulsive response, calm as the surface of a mirror and absolutely unemotional, selfless and full of compassion, forever loving and kind in both words and deeds and so on.

[5] [服众]: 使众人心服。All are convinced and hold in high respect.

[6] To all the kind and compassionate people, the Sage shall be kind and care for them all. To those who are less kind and neither compassionate, he would shower them with the same level of kindness and care because this is the only way to guide everyone to learn to be kind and compassionate. Over time, the people shall cultivate core moral principles of mutual love, compassion and kindness, leading to the evolution of a kind and caring culture. [7] As in souls, they appear in a spectral frequency that is beyond the full spectrum of the colors of the rainbow, the spirits are of another spectrum altogether and definitely not as bright orange color which sits in well within the spectral colors of the rainbow.
