Walk and be kind to Mother Earth

Millions of employees working in the oil industry will hate me for writing this story. As you know, the oil giants declare that they are green. They proclaimed they support GAIA with 100% of their souls and hearts. They have ISO140001 quality management system in place. What do these mean?

The core element of ISO140001 or go green is three magic words. They are: Reduce, Recycle and Re-use. We know that the weather is getting warmer. Global warming causes hurricanes, abnormal drought, and flooding causing havocs in many parts of the world.

The oil giants tell their part of the story, “As a global citizen, we are green.” But do they do anything to help reducing the gasoline or diesel consumption? Remember, the first word of the core element of ISO140001 is “Reduce”. Certainly they don’t. That is against their intentions to sell even more oil. On the contrary, they want the public to consume more fuel and not to reduce fuel consumption.

Read the following story carefully. You can do your part for the environment, save lots of money for yourself and at the same time, it is very good for your health, too.

There was a study[1] on the Maasai tribe living in Kenya, central Africa. The men raise large flocks of cattle and goats in the vast African savannah for food. Often they have to walk for 5 to 6 hours a day alongside their flocks. The women have to walk for 2 to 3 hours a day to fetch water from ground water springs several miles away from their dwellings.

The Maasai people obtained meat and milk from their cattle husbandry for their staple diet; no vegetables or fruits or grains whatsoever. They live solely on meat and milk.

For city dwellers, that kind of diet is a sure formula for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and high triglyceride. These are the commonly established health indicators generally used to predict the possibility of heart attack or stroke or diabetes. This is why doctors encourage us to consume more vegetables and fruits and less proteins and fats.

You make a guess. What is the heart attack rate, stroke or diabetic cases among the people of the Maasai tribe? You will be amazed that these occurrences are next to zero. The hospital there does not have a case of a person suffering from heart attack. Unbelievable!

What is the difference between the Maasai tribe’s and our daily habits? This reason can provide us with the vital clue to good health.

The most significance difference is they walk for several hours every day while we are comfortably seated in our comfy chairs or sofa the whole day. Be it at work or at rest, we are living a sedentary life.

Their daily long hours of walking contribute to the low cholesterol level and low triglyceride or fats in the blood streams and these are directly linked to their exceptional good health condition.

Today I walk for two hours a day. Every day after 5:30pm I will put on my walking shoes and walk around my neighborhood without fail. The only time I did not was when it rained in the late afternoon.

I am already 53 years old. Do you want to make a guess what my cholesterol level and blood pressure are? My cholesterol is around 200 gm/dl which is within the healthy range. Doctors know that as a person grows older, his blood pressure rises gradually. For example, a teenager's blood pressure is at around 105/68. Anything lower may mean a symptom of low blood pressure.

On the other hand, a (still considered healthy) person in his 40s or 50s has it in between120/80 and 130/90 – although of course, some can possibly reach 140/100 or higher. When that happens, doctors prescribe the consumption of statins or aspirin to control the blood pressure. The statins are a class of drugs that lowers the blood cholesterol level by reducing the production of cholesterol in the liver. Statins block the enzyme in the liver that is responsible for making cholesterol.

Aspirin is an anti-platelet agent. Aspirin alone has its greatest impact on improving survival rate among patients with heart attacks. Numerous studies have shown that aspirin reduces mortality (by 25%) when given to patients with heart attacks.

Let’s go back to understand why there is a progressive increase in blood pressure as a person ages. There is a simple explanation for this phenomenon. The artery system of blood vessels running in our entire body is progressively clogged at differing extent of blockages; some arteries are more clogged than the others.

As we age, plaque builds up on the wall of our arteries. It is something like the sewage pipes. The older the sewage pipes, the more clogs there are, making it more difficult for the waste water to flow though these pipes. The same goes with our blood. It will be more difficult to circulate as the arteries are progressively clogged.

In October 2008, I went for a surgical operation because of varicose veins on my left leg. The operation took 70 minutes and I was put on general anesthetic. The doctor monitored my blood pressure throughout the 70 minutes, 5 minutes interval each.

When I woke up, I looked at the blood pressure reading screen. It was 105/68 flat, throughout the entire 70 minutes. For a person who was 48 years old, doctors would suspect that I may be having low blood pressure. So they started looking for its symptoms but found none.

That was amazing. The doctors had no explanation other than saying that it was something abnormal. That was a little odd. I was one of those few abnormal people.

I am a trained engineer. In engineering term, an abnormal data point is called an outlier. When there is an outlier, an engineer is supposed to investigate the reason why that happened because when he had found the root cause, it is an opportunity for improvement in the production process, in order to build better quality products.

Contrary to that fact, most doctors simply ignore the outliers and thus, losing the opportunity to seek improvement for better health care management. Perhaps in my case, they did not have the resources to study why my blood pressure had been hovering steadily at 105/68 for 48 years. 

I guess the phenomenal of my blood pressure being flat over the last 30 years does not happen by accident. My eldest brother went for 6 heart bypasses in a single operation in year 2008. My body constitutions cannot be too different from him or perhaps, yours. The only difference between yours and my blood pressure level could be due to the years of my daily habit of walking for an hour or two.

Now, here is the game plan for you to improve your health. If you are a motorist, walk instead of drive when the destination can be reached within half-an-hour walk.

If the distance is further, don’t drive but ride a bicycle. Of course, you must have first bought a bicycle because this will be a total change in your travel pattern.

By allocating half an hour of your time to walk or to cycle, you will be effectively reducing the production of carbon dioxide from burning fuel. You will be supporting GAIA with actions and be much kinder to our Mother Earth.

Well, first you have to be kind to yourself. Therefore, you must walk or cycle every day. Most important of all, you have consciously built a half-an-hour daily exercise into your daily schedule. Walking has been proven to be a very effective measure to lower blood cholesterol and risk of stroke or heart attack. You will have a healthier life, period.

What would your changed travel habit mean to the oil companies? If every motorist were to travel by walking or cycling, the world would consume much less fuel. That will diminish their revenues.

Of course, the best approach is not to buy a car at all.
