Calcium intake from milk???

Calcium is one of the most important minerals to build strong bones and teeth. Osteoporosis sets in when our bones lack of calcium. That’s why the nutritionists strongly recommend us to consume dairy products such as milk and cheese which are rich in calcium.

Milk, indeed is one of the few foods rich in calcium. But seldom will one question where milk comes from. This question is rather na?ve, isn’t it?

We all know that milk comes from cows, but to be more precise, where does the calcium contained in the milk come from? The answer is, grass. Cows eat grasses only. So, where does the calcium in milk come from? Definitely, it must be from the grasses cows eat.

Why didn’t the nutritionists recommend us to eat grass like cows do? It is a bit hilarious, you might think. Human beings don’t eat grass but we certainly consume vegetables. In some cultures, vegetarians consume a lot of vegetables and no meat or diary products. What I’m trying to say is our calcium intake can come from the rich-in-calcium vegetables that we consume every day. We just need to add a little more vegetables onto our plates and that will give us the richest supplement of calcium we can ever have.

It is a scientific fact that a kilogram of vegetable contains several times more calcium than a litre of milk. All nutritionists know this fact. But, why do they choose to recommend you and I to drink more milk instead of consume more vegetables?

If they were to make that recommendation, the dairy farm owners will protest vehemently since demand for milk and other dairy products will drop considerably and that will hurt their business.

On another note, the dairy industry has been aggressively promoting low fat, high calcium dairy products produced by skimming off fats from the milk. Indeed, milk products are very fattening. The aim of the marketing people is very clear. That is, to convince consumers to consume even more milk without having to worry about putting on weight. They are saying, “Trust me, the low fat milk products will not make you fat. It will only fatten my wallet.” 

Yeah! Why push drinking more low fat milk to increase calcium intake and not vegetables? We all know that vegetables contain very little calorie and thus, would not cause us to put on more weight. But the dairy industry hid this piece of information from the public because this piece of knowledge will hurt its business interest. It will not be so kind to tell the world that there is a safer and much healthier way to increase calcium intake - that is, eat more vegetables.

The discovery of vitamins is medical science. However, which industrialists (businessmen) do not enjoy a game of “the veil of misinformation”? The worst offenders are the industrialists who peddle these products.
